We need to hang out and spar.
Definitely. I love having my ass handed to me. :V I know that sounds like snide sarcasm, but I mean it. I love sparring, and will run myself ragged doing it, but I’m not great so I often lose. xD
That fact will never stop me. Now, I just need a way to close that pesky distance…
I only have one friend I can spar with. Out sessions last maybe a half hour once or twice a month during summer. Neither of us are any good. Rather than sparring it’s closer to two dorks in a backyard hitting each other with sticks. (Until I can afford something decent I have part of a hockey stick as a wooden practice sword. Hopefully that changes this summer.) So if anything we’re about even in skill! Totally different if either of us fought against Valhallawaits.
There is only one answer for that distance: Longboats.
I’ve been waiting to find a way to enter this conversation! I’m far from talented, but I like to think that I can hold my own for a little while. If you tempt me enough I might just set sail for those distant northern lands to join you both.
I might do better than I thought, then. xD I get about as much time in myself, which is a damn shame. But it amounts to about the same; two dorks with sticks. I do recommend the Rawlings synthetic swords. I recently got my hands on one and it’s quite nice. I haven’t had the opportunity to fight with it yet, but the videos I’ve seen are rather impressive. It won’t exactly replicate a viking sword (they’re more geared toward later medieval styles) but you can get them close with some custom options. There’s one supplier that makes their own parts, including a wooden viking guard and pommel with some knotwork. :D
I think Maille-Man and I might stand a chance if we teamed up, but otherwise I think you get in a lot more practice than we do, and would kick our asses one-on-one. xD That won’t stop is from trying.
Here’s the part where everyone goes “Awww, fuck”:
Longboats won’t work for me. I’m in fucking Kansas…
Nivulus: I’ve heard good things about Rawlings’ swords from Skallagrim, a trusty youtuber who is all about weapons. My question is, though, how would it do against a solid wood shield? Well, even if it is Late Medieval, the sword length for the one handed sword is about the same.
Oh, and if you can’t sail here… Put wings on the boat!
Vahallawaits: You’ve still got the edge on us in combat. And if you sail up this way I know some small towns we can raid. Either that or we can sit around and drink for 80% of the time.
Skal’s review was actually what clinched it for me. Some of the videos I’ve seen were of sword and buckler, and they had the all steel bucklers, so I imagine they would do fairly well against wood. Especially since they flex, unlike wood, or poly swords.
Getting out to the east coast has actually been a goal of mine, since i have friends in NY that I’ve wanted to visit for years now. If I ever managed to get there, I might be able to swing north. :D
